kerravonsen: Crafty: a medly of beads (craft)
[personal profile] kerravonsen posting in [community profile] magpie
Giving a beader a broken necklace and saying "Here, have some beads" is like giving a knitter a moth-eaten sweater and saying "Here, have some yarn."

(And, yes, I have had people give me broken necklaces.)

Mileage can vary from beader to beader on that one. I've had good luck with salvaged beads, and most of the others I can use for teaching purposes. (It's really handy for some of my students when I provide a few beads.) Still others have gone to apprentices as challenges, because I did a lot of taking things apart and building with the pieces when I was starting.

But if that's not a person's particular kind of fun, or if the pieces aren't remotely useful in one's style of work, then yeah, broken necklaces are a big pain rather than a pleasure. (And it takes time to do the salvage work, too. And not everything is good salvage. By a long shot.)
